Neck and Shoulder Pain

Neck pains tell us a lot about ourselves: how we sit, stand, sleep and how we keep our head position while at work. Many people suffer from the so-called forward head carriage. It causes tightening of the neck and the shoulder muscles, followed shortly by pain. The culprit to this wrong muscle memory is our modern lifestyle and work habits: too many screens in front of us, too long driving hours, poor posture.

To illustrate how this works, imagine you put a baseball bat on the floor to stand vertically, then put an orange on its top. If you slightly lean the orange and the bat forward, they will fall forward. To to keep the construction in the vertical position without falling, a string is needed to attach the orange to the bat, and bat to the ground.

The bat represents your spine, and the string that connects orange to the bat is your neck and shoulder muscles around it. The string that connects bat to the ground, are the upper- and lower-back muscles.

When you sit straight and bend your head forward to do something, spinal muscles will pull your head backwards from the pelvic, all the way along the spine to the base of the skull, so you can suspend your head at any position without falling forward. 

The same problem occurs in an upright, standing position; if you bend forward to perform a task, the back part of legs and pelvic muscles must pull your upper body to maintain this position. The more you bend forward, or lift heavier weights, your hip and leg muscles will strain more.

Most doctors and practitioners tend to overlook muscle-related problems because they are never picked up by MRI, CT scan, X-ray and Ultrasound. Even though you undoubtedly suffer from neck and shoulder pain, you end up taking medications.

Occupations at risk are many: dentists, artists, cyclists, computer operators, accountants, musicians, fast-growing teenagers, any manual labourer. Some sports are also at increased risk.

Regular chiropractic adjustments with DTMT might reduce wrong muscle memory in your shoulder and neck, then increase the flexibility of joints. Both will reduce pain and expedite healing.
